If Your Dreams Don’t Scare You, Think Bigger

If your dreams don’t scare you are you reaching your full potential?

Or, are you fine with where you are right now in life? Just waiting for things to change and get better?

I hope not.

Because *Spoiler Alert* things won’t get better unless you do something about it. Everything’s on you!

Only you can make your vision and dreams come true.

Many of us know what we’d love to be doing with our lives. But how many of us actually take action and get shit done?

The answer = very few.

If Your Dreams Don’t Scare You, You NEED to Change

All too often in life, we start out with big goals of what we WANT to achieve.

When we’re young, those dreams are often unrealistic. But it doesn’t mean they’re of no value.

As kids, we often look up to those around us who make a difference.

We see police or firefighters in action and they seem so brave and heroic. The vet who saves our beloved pet. Or the nurse who gave us a cast or bandages and stays by our side when we’re down and out.

Many of us fall in love. Start having children, building a life, and soon, those dreams start to fade away. But, for those who NEVER let go of those dreams, for those still dreaming, keep going.

And if you’re someone ‘just getting by’ in life, those dreams you have should still be relevant. They should still inspire…

And scare you.

Yet, so many of us never go after our dreams because of this fear. And if you’re one of those individuals, know this – FEAR is a great motivator.

It’s okay to be afraid because if your dreams don’t scare you they aren’t big enough

Until You Die, There is No Time Limit

Reaching a certain age doesn’t mean your dreams cannot come true.

Because any dream worth having doesn’t happen overnight. And that’s probably a good thing.

Life would be crazy unfulfilling to me if that’s how things came to be.

Instead, our dreams test and challenge us. They make us ask, just how bad do you want it?

There’s a process of realizing them. And you have to trust that process. Have faith. And know that each step you take will get you closer to your ultimate goal.

So stay locked in and focus. Do the work.

But if your dreams don’t scare you, something is wrong.

People start new adventures all the time. They go back to school when they’re older, start new businesses, and do a ton of other things I could go on and on about.

But I won’t.

No one can tell you it’s too late. It’s never too late. Yes, you won’t achieve everything on the first day.

But don’t let that stop you from starting. That’s the most important part. Actually starting.

  • Sign up for that art class
  • Take those damn dance lessons
  • Enroll in community college
  • Buy someone’s course online and learn how to cook
  • Travel the world and see some new shit

And know you’re the only one holding you back. You and your fears.

Because if you want to be a doctor, you know that’s gonna take time. An if you apply to medical school and don’t get accepted, is that where the dream ends?

Of course not.

That’s where your dreams begin. Figure it out.

Your dreams should scare you. They should make you want to get better. Force you to keep learning and growing.

Because when you first applied, you weren’t ready yet. You needed some more time to grow, and prepare yourself to try again.

Go become a medic and volunteer with a whole new country.

You can even pick up another language along the way. A new language that’ll make you an even better doctor in the future.

Take some part-time classes that will guarantee you know more the next time you apply.

And then you go fucking do it!

Apply again. Become a doctor.

There is No One Way

Never limit yourself and think there is only one way to achieve your goal.

There are plenty of ways. You need to figure them all out and try them all until something works.

Why only apply to one medical school?

Apply to several.

One is not enough. Because while you might have one dream, there are a shit ton of different ways you can achieve it.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a singer. And release a lot of music. Are you going to just wake up and become famous overnight?

No.

You need to start off where most people do. Take lessons. Make connections, volunteer, enter contests, go perform somewhere. And look for any opportunity that might be available.

Any opportunity that will bring you one day closer to your goal. Because if you knock on one door and don’t get an answer, try the next damn door.

Think Big What Are You Afraid Of?

What is it about your dreams that scare you?

Figure it out.

Then learn how to tap into that fear and make it work for you. Instead of holding you back. Because if your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.

We Fear Failure:

The idea we can try something and fail at it can be overwhelming for many people. They fear not only failure.

But how others will perceive them and their failure.

Sure, there are people in life who love watching others fail. But there are many more who want to see you succeed.

Ignore the bullshit and negativity. Because there is no failure in trying.

Failure only comes when we don’t try.

So “fail” and learn from your setbacks. Trying is courageous. It forces you to figure out what’s not working.

And will give you the knowledge you need to try a new and different way.

We Fear Success:

Are you thinking – what if I make it?

How do I handle that? Saying to yourself “I am much better off in the background, just plodding along.”

Well… that’s a wild thought. Yet a very real fear for a lot of us. The fear isn’t really the success. But the work that’s needed to achieve it.

Working toward a goal takes guts.

It often involves giving up every comforting thing we know. And taking a leap of faith into the unknown.

It’s this unknown, the working without a safety net, and yes, the fear things won’t work out, that holds many of us back.

So Get to Know The Unknown

We’ve all faced hard times, sadness, and overcoming.

That’s life. It’s natural to fear certain things and imagine how certain events might turn out.

For Example:

  • New relationships
  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Kids
  • Quitting smoking
  • Adult education
  • Starting a new job
  • Getting fired
  • Visiting a new place
  • Trying something different

These types of challenges happen to people all the time.

Use the fear and the things you learned getting through some of these and apply them to your goals.

Fear is always going to be present.

When we overcome one roadblock on our journey, the obstacle doesn’t seem so bad. We’re able to figure out what’s needed and move forward to the next level.

So yes, your dreams should scare you.

And when they do, it’ll be 10x more rewarding once you make them come true.

Because If Your Dreams Don’t Scare You They Aren’t Big Enough

Your biggest dreams will and must scare you. You must take action to achieve them.

  1. Define what they are
  2. Have a Plan B
  3. Write them down daily
  4. Make them apart of you
  5. Do something every day that will move you closer to the goal
  6. Come at them from all angles
  7. And never stop believing

Because it doesn’t matter what your dreams are. They’re yours.

Don’t let anyone stop you from achieving them. Maybe you want to direct movies, maybe you want to be a farmer, a photographer, a model, or maybe you want to build houses.

Do what makes you happy and scares you the most. And if your dreams don’t scare you, dream BIGGER.
